I’m Okay, You’re A Fake

Cheryl Dragon’s second installment in a series about psychic Dr. Deanna Oscar is an enjoyable read and a delightful follow-up.

Dragon introduced us to De in I’m Okay, You’re Dead. After foiling a serial killer and surviving hurricane Katrina, our psychic detective is now faced with competition. On the night of her birthday she meets Muriel Jennings a self proclaimed psychic. De knows immediately that something is off, but who will believe her when it seems like she just jealous? When a murder case pits De against Jennings, who has a huge “cult-like” following, De must solve the murder first to save her reputation and lives.

Deanna Oscar is a likable heroine that you want to root for. And the cast of extras, just like the first time, are wonderfully drawn and intriguing. Dragon has some surprises in store for readers related to the people in De’s life including the drag queen Ivy, her cousin Greg the ex-priest, and Mary-Lou the rich socialite next-door. Throw in some family drama and you have a storm of distractions that would challenge any psychic’s focus.

Readers definitely want to start with the first book in the series that introduces all the players. This second book might be a bit confusing if you’re just trying to sort everyone out for the first time. Dragon keeps a complex group of extras in her stories and that might be a challenge for a new reader. But it is one of the things that makes Dragon’s stories so worth the read.
